Denise D. Porter arrived in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio to assume the position of Postmaster in February of 2003. Following the official installation ceremony on March 28, 2003, Ms. Porter made historical strides by becoming Cincinnati’s first female postmaster since the inception of mail service in 1794. As postmaster, Ms. Porter oversees a workforce of nearly 1,700 employees and an operation that generates $470 million in revenue annually. Her areas of responsibility include the successful operation of twenty-one stations and branches, fourteen retail operations and the computerized forwarding system for the Cincinnati District.
Ms. Porter began her postal career in Long Beach, California as a computerized mark-up clerk in 1978. She has served in positions of increasing responsibility throughout her career, including Delivery Supervisor, Station Manager, Area Manager of Customer Services and Postmaster of Bellflower, California. Ms. Porter has also held many temporary assignments including Delivery Analyst in the Great Lakes Area and National Program Manager of Automated Workforce Projection Systems at USPS Headquarters, Washington DC. In 1994 she was promoted to the position of Manager of Operations Programs Support in the Chicago District. Following this position, Ms. Porter served as the Postmaster of New Haven, Connecticut. September 2000 marked the achievement of Denise Porter as the first female postmaster in New Haven’s 211-year history.
In addition to her postal career, Ms. Porter has been actively involved within each community she serves. Her volunteerism includes work with the American Cancer Society, AARP, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers as well as children’s programs in museums and elementary schools.
Ms. Porter believes in the importance of education and is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree for Business Management.
