BCW Health & Balance Seminar Success!
(11/10/01)
Nearly 100 high velocity business and professional women
from Cincinnati and surrounding communities filled the
Urban League Conference Room to capacity to listen and
share the unique health experiences of African American
women at BCW's first Health Seminar, A MATTER OF
PRIORITIES. This health and balance seminar, sponsored by
Aetna U.S. Health Care, provided a positive convening
point for women who are recognizing that now is the time
to make their health their #1 priority. Following a
healthy morning snack, the audience was awakened by an
exciting musical rendition of "You've Got A
Friend" by the acclaimed local vocalist, P.Ann
Everson-Price.
A distinguished panel of African American women health
providers including Dr. Camile Graham, Pediatrician; Dr.
Jacqueline Kinard, Psychologist, Dr. Dinee Riley,
Internist and Dr. Gloria Walker, Family Practitioner
provided participants with invaluable information on some
of the major recurring health issues for African American
Women. Participants raised a myriad of health concerns
including everything from anthrax to throid conditions.
They also learned what participants needed to do to reduce
the incidences of these health problems by changing their
lifestyles.
The remarkable, Dr. Andrea Sullivan, renowned Naturopathic
Physician from Washington, D.C. was the luncheon keynote
speaker. Dr. Sullivan, author of A Path to Healing,
informed participants of various insights that she has
learned through her years of study and practice.
Participants were taken on guided tour of Dr. Sullivan's
book, as she discussed the healing of mind, body and
spirit. Dr. Sullivan challenged the audience to take
command of their lives and that it simply was A Matter of
Priorities. Dr. Sullivan was given a standing ovation and
her books were immediately sold out. One participant,
purchased eight copies of Dr. Sullivan's book to give to
family and friends. Another participant, so anxious to
have an autographed edition, left the seminar when she
learned that the books had been sold out, and drove to a
local bookstore, returning to obtain Dr. Sullivan's book
before she headed for the airport!
Following a second musical tribute by P. Ann
Everson-Price, the grand prize drawing of a luxury Spa
Odyssey resort vacation to be held next spring in
Scottsdale, Arizona was awarded and the lucky winner,
Karla Phillips from the University of Cincinnati, was both
excited and shocked to be the winner of such a spectacular
prize valued at over $3000. The day concluded with special
calming movement exercises and several other door prizes.
Participants left with a bag full of valuable health
information and a few extra gift treats.
The participants evaluated the seminar as exceeding their
expectations, informative, enlightening and life changing
and urged that BCW plan a follow up event.
BCW will host a spa day as a follow-up activity in
February of 2002. Additionally, as agreed, BCW will
maintain a directory of African American Women Physicians
and Health Providers on its website and we invite everyone
to help us to develop an updated and comprehensive list by clicking here
for the African American Women Physicians and Health
Providers directory data form.
